Gathering Sunday, September 20!
As in the rest of the community, life in Duluth’s churches returns to its usual activities after Labor Day. At Pilgrim, we launch the program year with Gathering Sunday, September 13. Worship begins at 10 am, followed by coffee and a light lunch, plus a bake sale (benefiting children’s music) and pinata-making (in preparation for our community-wide Hogwarts party).
If you’ve wondered about church life in general, or Pilgrim in particular, this is the Sunday to try it out for yourself. Our choir and bell choir return to enrich worship. The children will fill the front pews for Time with Children. Our childcare is staffed and ready as always. A splendid light lunch is being prepared. And children’s Sunday School begins a new year with large group activities during the sermon time.
In the following weeks, we implement a new learning format for children, as they engage the day’s scriptures in an abbreviated Sunday School during sermon time, then return to the worshiping community. Several new opportunities for kids to make music are being offered by Director of Music Rachael Kresha, meeting before or after worship hour. Once a month we’ll have opportunity to learn, serve, and grow intergenerationally during 2nd Hour through a variety of programs. And on September 27, we engage new conversations on anti-racism during an adult 2nd Hour discussion based on Dr. Jennifer Harvey’s work, “Dear White Christians.” (Dr. Harvey’s keynote address to the Minnesota Conference UCC can be found at http://uccmn.org/uccinmn/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Jennifer-Harvey-Key-Note-speech.pdf ).
No one needs anything “thing” to add to their busy lives. But everyone needs to be supported and challenged in growing into our best and truest selves as unique children of God. We strive to offer exactly that kind of support and challenge through weekly worship, educational opportunities, and ways to serve within the church and especially the wider world in its hurts and needs. To learn more, join us this Sunday or any Sunday at 10:00 a.m., explore this website and our Facebook page, or contact the office or the pastor.
