We seek to be an intergenerational community where children, youth and adults worship, learn, work and serve together. We offer child care for many events so that parents can participate and our youngest children can get to know other members of the congregation.
Infants and children under age 4
A child care area staffed by an attendant and volunteers from the congregation is available for infants and children up to four years old each Sunday morning during worship and adult education events. In addition, a Children’s Space is available on the first floor near the sanctuary for parents who would like to be with their children.
Children ages 4 through 6th grade
Pilgrim offers Church School each Sunday for children age 4-6th grade. Children are invited to join the congregation for a brief worship at the beginning of the 10:00 a.m. service. After Time With Children, children ages 4 through 6th grade are excused to attend Pilgrim Church School or to participate in specially planned children’s activities.
Children age 4-2nd grade learn Biblical stories through Godly Play. This curriculum engages children’s questions and encourages children to learn through arts and crafts, drama and music.
Children in grades 3-6 study the life and teachings of Jesus through the course “Jesus and His Kingdom of Equals.” This class is taught by Christian Educator Amy Sullivan and includes hands on activities as well as Scripture study.
Youth
Youth 7th grade and older are enrolled in confirmation classes taught by Rev. Charlotte Frantz. Confirmation instruction includes pairing each youth with an adult mentor to examine the meaning of Christian faith. Learning takes place in the classroom as well as through church and community service.
Children’s Music
Pilgrim offers an integrated music program for children ages 5-10. “Make A Joyful Noise” meets Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. Classes are taught by church musician Rachael Kresha.
Our Whole Lives
Our Whole Lives, a human sexuality values-based curriculum, is offered for middle-school youth in conjunction with the Unitarian Church of Duluth.
Service Learning
Pilgrim offers periodic mission projects and service trips. This year 3 youth and 8 adults are making a service trip to Guatemala. Recent activities have included a 2007 trip to Biloxi, Mississippi for hurricane recovery work; a Mission Duluth experience with CHUM in 2006, a trip to Heifer Project’s Overlook Farm in Massachusetts in 2004; and trip to Jamaica in 2001. Youth are also welcome to participate in the delegations to Chiapas, Mexico.
