My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

With each passing day I feel increasingly at home with you. Thank you for your warmth, your ideas, and your deep hopes for Pilgrim Church.

We have a few problems to solve and we have such good folks working on them! Torin Schwartz, Pilgrim’s Business Manager, has resigned. Bless Mary Sopoci for her willingness to step in—short-term—until we can hire a new Business Manager. During this time “between”, Mary will handle the financial matters of the church—check-writing, financial statement generation, etc. Jon Welles has added yet another hat to his already tall collection. He has taken on the duties of managing the building—working with contractors, building staff, renters and committee members. Between Mary and Jon, I am certain everything will be covered well.

We want to give Mary and Jon as much flexibility as possible, so Mary will be in and out depending on what work she needs to accomplish. Jon will be at church much more than before but will also not be adhering to a set schedule. Instead, if you have the need to talk to someone about a building issue—maintenance, cleaning, set up, or whatever—please call Jon on his cell at (218) 390‑2393 or call the Business Office cell at (218) 491‑1168. Jon will carry both phones with him and is willing to be available 24/7. If you have a financial need for reimbursement or a question about your giving, call the Business Office cell phone or leave a note in the Treasurer’s mailbox in the church office.

What else? Please keep telling me your names when I see you and wear your nametags at church. And let me know of your pastoral concerns for people you know. And can you volunteer to help with Hogwart’s Hallowe’en? Or join the handbell choir? We are rebuilding here at Pilgrim Church, and all of you can help.

Love,
Carla

Building Closed Thursday, October 21

Because of the plumbing work being done on Thursday, October 21, the water in the whole building will need to be shut off. For that reason, the church building will be closed on October 21 and 22.

Hogwarts Halloween at Pilgrim

There is an energetic team working to provide a fun, safe Halloween activity for our community. Grace and Camilla Beaster, Sarah Hartman, Andrew Streitz, and Cindy Grindy appreciate your support.

Pilgrim Hogwarts Halloween will be held the day before Halloween, Saturday, October 30, 4:00-6:00 pm outdoors. We are looking for volunteers to be at each station, to help set up, and to clean up. If you are willing and available, sign up at church or contact Cindy Grindy at (218) 349‑9611 or cindy@grindy.net.

Also we are looking for donations of Halloween candy and $ to purchase wand kits, etc. Please bring or have delivered any candy to the church by Wednesday, October 27, so it can be bagged up for our guests. Donations can be given to the church and marked Hogwarts Halloween. Thank you so much!

Pilgrim Book Club

Monday, November 8 | 4:00 pm

Pilgrim Book Group meets the second Monday of every month at 4:00 pm. For November 8 we will read 18 Tiny Deaths: The Untold Story of Frances Glessner Lee and the Invention of Modern Forensics. This selection is a “Book Club in a Bag." That means there are 10 copies of the book available to borrow for free. The books are in a blue bag in the church office. All you need do is take a book from the bag, sign your name on the sign-out sheet, read the book, and join us on Zoom on November 8 for discussion of the book.

Whether you are female or male, member of Pilgrim or not, you are welcome to join book group discussions. All that’s required is a commitment to read the book, or at least some of it, and join in the discussion.

For December we will be trying something different. Four current members of book group are published authors who have agreed to share a summary of their work with the rest of us. So during November you can contact Jean Jacobson to get a digital copy of the summaries. And more exciting news! If you are a writer and are willing to share a selection/summary of some of your work with the rest of us, contact Jean who will digitize your selection and make it available to those who request it.

So join us November 8 and December 13 for great book and writing discussions.

Join us on Zoom.

Show Us Your Walks

Anita and Harlan Stech and family recently returned to Duluth from a two-week trip to the Canadian Rockies. Here are three (of the over 1800) pictures they came back with, taken during day hikes along the highway between Jasper and Banff.

We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails! It's another way to stay connected in these troubled times.

What Patrick's Listening To

We lost one of the greats this week, two-time Academy Award–winning songwriter Leslie Bricusse. Here's Sammy Davis Jr. singing "What Kind of Fool Am I."
