My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
Don’t you long for the day when we don’t have to make decisions based on how virulent is the next Covid variant? We’re not there yet. You know, of course, that we are watching the numbers in our city and in our county. We are holding worship services at 10:00 am on Sunday mornings, but we understand if you choose to watch and worship from home. If you come to the church, you need to wear masks. We aren’t serving food or coffee. We are continuing to offer a children’s message in worship and time for children to do activities together up in the Sun Room and we’ll continue to do that until and unless the schools go back to remote learning. It will be two years ago this March that we began making significant changes in the way we live together and apart. Now, we have grown accustomed to adjusting here, changing plans there.
So here are some of the plans we are making, changing, adapting:
- We’re looking forward to receiving people into church membership in early February. I hope we can meet in person to get to know one another before the joining, so watch for more announcements, and spread the word.
- We’re beginning Confirmation in February—again, hoping to meet in-person!
- We’re planning to sell four different kinds of soup on Soup-er Bowl Sunday. $10/pint with the money going to support the local food program Loaves and Fishes.
- I’m hosting Wednesday morning conversations—the first this past Wednesday. It was easy and meaningful conversation. Join us this coming Wednesday!
- Warren Turner (my spouse) and I are seeking writers and poets to send us pieces to include in a Lenten devotional guide. We’ll send more details (writing prompts, word number, etc) next week.
What else can we offer to get us through this cold winter and long isolation? Would you like to do a jigsaw puzzle exchange? I’ve been wondering about reading a chapter a day via Zoom in February. I’m knitting hats and mittens to put in the Blessing Box. If you would like some yarn so you can do the same, just let me know—turns out I have quite a stash and I’m happy to share!
Otherwise, please stay in touch with one another, come on Sundays if you can, peruse a seed catalog, and stay safe.
Lovingly
—Carla
Need Transportation to Church?
Better than Lyft and Uber combined! Call John Fochs at (218) 341-1982 for a roundtrip ride. He has drivers standing by, ready to help out.
Soup-er Bowl
Pilgrims are planning to prepare and sell soup to raise funds for Loaves and Fishes, an organization that is dedicated to feeding hungry people in the Duluth area. Soup will be available on Sunday, February 13, after worship, for $10 a pint. Stay tuned for more information on how to order!
Pilgrim Scholarship
The Pilgrim Scholarship Fund was established by Wally and Hazel Niss and included gifts in memory of Susie Britton. According to Wally, the fund was established with the intention of providing assistance to one or more students during their higher education career. This scholarship is intended for students who were a part of Pilgrim as they were growing up. In 2013, gifts in memory of Patricia Streitz were added to the fund.
Pilgrim offers a scholarship for graduating seniors who are attending a post-secondary institution, an award up to $1,000. Eligible recipients must complete an application. Awards are given directly to the educational institution to defray the cost of tuition or room and board. Awards are given to students who are involved in Pilgrim, can explain how Pilgrim has benefitted them, and obtain two letters of reference from Pilgrims who are not family members.
Coffee with Carla
Grab a coffee (or the morning beverage of your choice) and join us for conversation. We will meet via Zoom each Wednesday at 10:00 am. See you there!

Show Us Your Walks
Tischer Creek, from Diane Desotelle
We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails! It's another way to stay connected in these troubled times.
What Patrick's Listening To
I almost thought to list Brian Ferneyhough's second string quartet as a joke, but I would never be that cruel. Instead, here's a lovely Trio Sonata by Telemann.
