My Bailiwick

I’m looking forward to this weekend—aren’t you? We have teams of soup-makers coming to create buckets of soup, Valentine Red Velvet cookies on the menu for coffee hour following worship, a reporter and photographer from the Duluth News Tribune ready to visit on Sunday to see what all the buzz is about. I hope you’ll be with us for worship! Remember that we’re having Children’s Moments in the service and that after that, children are invited to go to the Sun Room for crafts and play. Another reminder: even though the mayor is lifting the mask mandate, we think masks should still be worn in worship, especially for singing. They can be removed briefly for coffee and a Red Velvet Cookie!

And since you’re coming anyway, please bring some food to put in the Blessing Box. Remember that in winter months, food contributions need to be dry so as not to be ruined by changing temps. Good examples are boxes of cereal (cold or hot), packages of dried soup, mac and cheese, packaged rice entrees, crackers, dried fruit like raisins or apple slices, granola or other breakfast bars, ramen noodles, powdered milk, and so on. Just think about how something would react to being frozen and donate accordingly! If you would like to bring large quantities of food, we will keep it inside and put it out a little at a time. Another thought: hygiene items are also good—bars of soap, packaged tooth brushes, tubes of toothpaste—you get the idea. No books, please, and if you have a jigsaw puzzle, bring that inside for our puzzle exchange.

Just this morning, we found a thank you note left for us in the Blessing Box. Dustin wrote: “I have received some of your donations so I don’t have to be hungry. I’ve been struggling with alcoholism and mental health by myself. I want to give thanks for the blessings I’ve received from the donations here.”

You’re welcome, Dustin. It is our honor and privilege to give.

Love,
Carla

150th Anniversary Story

The Duluth News Tribune will be at Pilgrim this Sunday for a story on our 150th Anniversary!

A reporter and photographer will be on hand to cover our Sunday service on February 13 and the Souper Bowl activities afterward. It will be great to have a full sanctuary. Please come if you are comfortable with being there in person.

Pilgrim Book Club

Organizers of the book club are asking readers of our February book, Wonder, to please return their copies to the Pilgrim office as soon as possible. Carol Bacig hopes to return all our copies to the library on or before February 16. Thanks! Our meeting on this book will be on Zoom, Monday, February 14, at 4:00 pm.

Join us on Zoom.

Meeting ID: 856 8820 1294
Passcode: 260291

Also note: The Pilgrim Book group will be reading Dear Life by Canadian author Alice Munro for our March discussion (Monday, March 14, at 4:00 pm). Alice Munro was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013 and was awarded the 2009 Booker International Prize for her overall contribution to fiction on the world stage. Copies of Dear Life will be available in the Pilgrim Office after February 16. Should be a great read! One reviewer writes, “Alice Munro captures the essence of life in her brilliant new collection of stories. Moments of change, chance encounters, the twist of fate that leads a person to a new way of thinking or being: the stories in Dear Life build to form a radiant, indelible portrait of just how dangerous and strange ordinary life can be.”

Need Transportation to Church?

Children's Space in the Sun Room

On Sunday, February 13, children are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal to church. There will be activities based on Noah's Ark in the Sun Room that morning. See you then!

Coffee with Carla

Grab a coffee (or the morning beverage of your choice) and join us for conversation. We will meet via Zoom each Wednesday at 10:00 am. See you there!
