eNews for Thursday, September 1

My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

We’ve turned the calendar page to September—yikes! May this be a month of new commitment and hope.

Remember that this Sunday, September 4, we are all invited to worship at Peace UCC at 9:00 am to help celebrate Duluth/Superior Pride. We won’t have worship at Pilgrim this Sunday, which is fortunate timing because the parking lot is being seal-coated tomorrow and we shouldn’t drive on it till next week anyway!

Tonight, Cindy Grindy and I are meeting with Sunday School teachers to help prepare for this next school year, and tomorrow night is movie night with our teens. Then next week, our new youth group adult advisors will meet to help plan a year of activities and hopes with and for Pilgrim’s teens. Also, our choir begins rehearsals next week, and Salter Hall carpeting is being cleaned and on and on and on!

All these activities are in preparation for the beginning of our church year—Sunday, September 11. Please make every effort to be with us for worship as we dedicate our church year to the glory of God.

In the meantime, blessings to you all this Labor Day weekend. Spare a thought to all those who advocated for fair labor practices and protections in the late 1800s. Now if we could just assure a livable minimum wage!

Love,
Carla

Parking Lot Resurfacing

The parking lot at Pilgrim will be closed Friday, September 2, for resurfacing. With good weather, it will open again on Monday, September 5.

No Worship at Pilgrim this Sunday

Join us at Peace Church (1111 N 11th Ave E) at 9:00 am for an interfaith Pride service, with breakfast to follow.

Office Closed Monday

Our building and offices will be closed Monday, September 5, for the Labor Day holiday.

Pilgrim Book Club

Pilgrim Women’s Book Club will be via Zoom on Monday, September 12, at 4:00 pm. Our book choice for the month is Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan. The Library Journal’s starred review says, “Callahan crafts a masterpiece that details the friendship and ultimate romance between the real Davidman and Lewis [that’s C. S. Lewis] … Callahan’s writing is riveting and her characters spring to life.” Because this is a Book Club in a Bag, there are multiple copies available. Stop in the church office to sign out a copy. Then, please join us for a lively discussion on September 12 at 4:00 pm. See you there!

Join us on Zoom.

Damiano Soup Kitchen

Pilgrim members, the next opportunity for volunteering at the Damiano Soup Kitchen is Monday, August 22, 8:30 am-1:00 pm. Two or three volunteers are needed. Please contact the church office if you are willing to help at office@pilgrimduluth.org or (218) 724-8503.

Show Us Your Walks

We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails!

What Patrick's Listening To

Some of my favorite, lesser known songs by Kurt Weil, sung by Julie Andrews with André Previn at the piano.
