My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

At the end of this year, I think of Howard Thurman’s beautiful meditation “Blessings at Year’s End”.

*I remember with gratitude the fruits of the labors of others, which I have shared as a part of the normal experience of daily living.

I remember the beautiful things that I have seen, heard, and felt—some, as a result of seeking on my part, and many that came unheralded into my path, warming my heart and rejoicing my spirit.

I remember the moments of distress that proved to be groundless, and those that taught me profoundly about the evilness of evil and the goodness of good.

I remember the new people I have met, from whom I have caught glimpses of the meaning of my own life and the true character of human dignity.

I remember the dreams that haunted me during the year, keeping me ever mindful of goals and hopes which I did not realize but from which I drew inspiration to sustain my life and keep steady my purposes.

I remember the awareness of the Spirit of God that sought me out and gave me assurance that undercut despair and confirmed my life with new courage and abiding hope.

Love to us all,
Carla

P.S. This Sunday, New Year’s Day, we’ll be worshipping with communion, and after worship, those of you who can, please help us undecorate from Christmas—sad, but necessary, and we could use your help!

Second Saturday Volunteer Event
January 14 | 9:00 am-12:00 pm | Pilgrim
Justice through Advocacy and Mercy through Meals

Join us to learn and take action for those who are homeless in our community. Learn about the importance of using your voice to advocate for legislation that supports building new housing such as tiny homes, provides for the growing immediate needs through emergency shelters, and helps to make housing more affordable for those earning minimum wage or less. Act by helping to prepare breakfast bags for those using the warming center (as of Dec 20, 2022, up to 80 people have been using this space just to stay warm) so they have nourishment to start their day. In addition to hearing about the legislation from our partners, we will be writing letters or making phone calls to our state legislators and making up bags filled with muffins and fruit.

Winter Food Resources

Here is a helpful flyer with information on food resources in Duluth, for seniors, youth, and anyone who may need some help.

Helping Families with Health Insurance

Cary Plocher is the MNsure navigator for the Duluth YMCA at the Essentia Wellness Center. She helps people apply for health insurance through MNsure, Minnesota's health insurance marketplace. The holiday season can be a fun, festive time of year, but it can also be financially stressful for families. Many parents do not know that they may be eligible to get paid back for their children's health insurance premiums and that their children can have free secondary coverage through the state of Minnesota.

Anyone with questions related to health insurance, or who would like assistance in applying, should contact Cary at cplocher@duluthymca.org or (218) 241-8008 ext. 587.

"Twelfth Night" organ concert at Sacred Heart Music Center

The Friends of the Felgemaker is presenting a "Twelfth Night Celebration" organ concert on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Sacred Heart Music Center, 201 West 4th Street in Duluth. Twin Ports organists Brian Kapp, Charles Sundquist, Karen Hanson Sande, Rachael Kresha, Samuel Black, Tom Hamilton and Velda Graham Bell will take turns performing Christmas music and leading sing-along carols on the historic 19th century Felgemaker pipe organ. Here's a chance to hear beautiful Christmas music before it goes away for another year! Come early for some hot cider and holiday treats, too. A $20 donation is suggested.
