My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

What a difference the sun makes!

Lent is on my mind. This afternoon the Worship and Arts Committee meets and we will do some fine-tuning on plans for Lent and Holy Week, including worship, Second Hours, and an ecumenical Good Friday service. I’ve been making purple candles for the communion table and my office. Our home kitchen looks like it’s been visited by Harold and his purple crayon!

January and February have always been quiet months for me, weeks of reading and knitting and pondering. This year I’ve gone back to several books by Christian ethicist Karen Lebacqz, preparing for the Second Hour series on justice and mercy. And I’m looking forward to hearing from Seth Currier, Executive Director of the Damiano Center, about their work caring for people in need. Seth will be speaking in our worship service on February 5 and leading a Second Hour after worship that day. Damiano will receive the proceeds from the Souper Bowl sales. And I’m readying Valentine’s Day gifts for a couple of little 3rd grade girls in New Hampshire who captured my heart the very minute they were born.

How are you spending these long, cold weeks? Read on for some ideas, including ordering soup, exchanging jigsaw puzzles, coming together on Sunday mornings.

Love to us all,
Carla

P.S. I’m in need of three more crock pots to make my chicken chili for Souper Bowl Sunday. Can you bring yours in?

P.P.S. Past sermons are getting printed and put out on the kiosk. Feel free to share!

Pilgrim Women's Book Club

For February, Pilgrim Women’s Book Club is reading The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan. The book jacket recommends this novel as “A beautiful story of love, loss, and the redemptive power of friendship,” and also, “Old-fashioned storytelling with a sprinkling of magic.” We like using the book-club-in-a-bag selections, so there are copies of this book available in the church office in the blue bag to the left of the office entry. Just stop in and sign one out. We will meet at 4:00 pm on Zoom on February 13. And your book will be due back to the church office on Wednesday, February 15. Join us for what always proves to be a fun and lively discussion.

Hope to see you on Zoom.

Souper Bowl

Here is your answer to: "What are we having for dinner?" and "How can I help the Damiano Center?" There are five delicious options for great soup, all prepared by Pilgrims in the Pilgrim kitchen.

  • Pastor Carla's White Chicken Chili
  • Steve and Holly's Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup
  • Indonesian Carrot Soup—a Steve Cushing original
  • The Youth Group with Chicken Wild Rice Soup
  • Anne and Bob's Amazing Gourmet Vegetable Soup

Order by Sunday, February 5, using this order form, paper forms in Salter Hall, or by calling (218) 724-8503. Pick up on Super Bowl Sunday, February 12, at Pilgrim, between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Each 20 oz container is $10. All the funds raised will go to the Damiano Center. Thank you!

Spirited Away: Japanese Music for Low Brass

The music of Joe Hisaishi and Studio Ghibli has had a profound impact on the solo instrumental writing of Japanese composers. The style is very tonal with elements of jazz harmonies, and it lends itself well to lyric, romantic solos. This recital is a showcase of modern Japanese writing for low brass, performed by CSS music faculty members Dr. Derek Bromme, trombone and tuba, and Dr. Jessica Schroeder, piano. They will be joined by adjunct faculty member Byron Klimek, cello.

Tickets are $12 general admission and FREE for students (pre-K to college) and for Sisters of the St. Scholastica Monastery.

We encourage you to reserve your tickets in advance.

Puzzle Exchange

Do you need an activity to occupy your time during these cold and snowy Duluth days? If so, a PUZZLE EXCHANGE is just what you need! Visit the Puzzle Exchange table in Salter Hall during the month of February starting Sunday, February 5, through February 28. Members are encouraged to share their new or used puzzles, or not, and take one or more home to enjoy!
