Newsletter and eNews for December 2

My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

I’m on my way to California to officiate my niece’s wedding and soak up some warm sun. I will miss you this weekend! This Sunday’s music will be beautiful and then the happy Advent workshop will take place! My Warren will be the liturgist for Sunday worship, and Anne and Bob MacLean will be lighting the second Advent candle. I hope to be watching.

Yesterday came the expected report that the new Covid variant has made an appearance in the U.S. It reminds us all to be vigilant and careful, wear our masks, wash our hands, get vaccinated and boosted. Please take good care, everyone. This thing isn’t through with us yet.

Love to you all.—Carla

Pilgrim News

Here is the latest edition of Pilgrim's Newsletter.

Beautiful Notecards

After worship on Sundays through Christmas, you are invited to purchase notecards featuring our lovely stained glass Tiffany windows. These will make a terrific Christmas gift. The cost is $12/ten notecards. They will be available in Salter Hall. If you would like to purchase some during the week contact Patrick in the office at (218) 724‑8503 or office@pilgrimduluth.org.

Advent Family Toolkits

The Minnesota Conference is sharing accessible and interactive at-home family faith formation resources. Toolkits are available every week on Wednesdays through Epiphany. You can download the toolkits at uccmn.org.

Advent Workshop

Join us on Sunday, December 5, after worship to prepare for the season. We will have light refreshments in Salter Hall immediately following worship, and crafts in Fellowship Hall: ornament creation, card making, wreaths, and more. Are you willing to host a table with a craft, or to help with set up/clean up? Reach out to Mary Anderson at manders1@css.edu or (218) 213‑7704. For safety, we ask you to stay masked in Fellowship Hall—please leave food and beverages upstairs.

Choir Cantata

During worship on Sunday, December 5 (before the Advent workshop!), Pilgrim Choir and a few special guests will present Schubert's Mass in G. This gentlest of masses was written in six days in March 1815 when Schubert was a mere 18 years old. It has been a favorite of choirs around the world since it was published in 1846. We look forward to sharing this beautiful, contemplative work with you during worship.

December 19 Youth Worship Service

Pilgrim’s children and youth will be helping to lead worship on Sunday, December 19. They’ll share music (including from the new children’s bell choir!), carols, readings, and a readers’ theater Christmas story, plus a few other surprises. Join us!

Longest Night Service

Please join us for a quiet service of prayer, candlelight, and music as we observe the longest night of the year. The service will be in Pilgrim Church’s chapel with a special guest, cellist Byron Klimek.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service

Join us at 5:00 pm on Friday, December 24, for a Christmas Eve service of music, carols, readings, and candlelight.

Show Us Your Walks

A view of the bay from the Piedmont trails

We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails! It's another way to stay connected in these troubled times.

What Patrick's Listening To

We lost Stephen Sondheim on Friday last week. Here's 30 of the most glorious minutes he gave to us. (This space is going to be a lot of Sondheim for a while, so strap in)
