My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims, I hope you might attend the community Thanksgiving this evening at First Lutheran Church at 7:00 pm, but if not, you can watch it online (there's a link below). I’ll be reading one of my favorite Howard Thurman meditations.

And just like that, it’s Advent! We have some Advent activities planned to help us all prepare our hearts for the arrival of the baby Jesus, Emmanuel—God with us. We especially hope you can join us this Saturday afternoon at 2:00 for “Hanging of the Greens”, otherwise known as Christmas decorating! My son Joe will be with us—he’s tall so he can reach those high places. And we’ll have pizza to keep our energy up. If you’re in town, please come on over to help.

We are including with this email a copy of one of my favorite Advent traditions—a new-each-year Advent calendar prepared by the Rev. Molly Phinney Baskette. Molly is incredibly creative, fun, serious, and brave. She publishes the calendar in her blog—Doomsday Dance Party. If you’re having trouble downloading it, we’ll have printed copies at church this Sunday.

Also, if you saw us ring handbells this past Sunday and thought it looked fun, it is! And we could use more ringers! Please feel free to try it out—we rehearse on Wednesdays at 4:00 for one hour. Our next rehearsal is December 1 at 4:00 pm, and there’s a spot for you!

May Thanksgiving bring you some moments of peace, good food, stimulating conversations, and gentle rest.

Love,
Carla

This year’s Interfaith Thanksgiving Service is being hosted by First Lutheran Church at 1100 East Superior Street, both in person and livestreamed.
