My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

This week and last, as I was going through the mailing labels for two important letters out to the congregation, I realized how many of you I do not yet know. It made me sad, especially as I am preparing for this weekend's memorial service for John Morrison, keenly aware that I never met him. I will be relying on things his family and friends have told me about him—good stories and memories, but still, I wish I had met him myself, heard the sound of his voice, listened to him reminisce about a life well-lived. The pandemic has kept us isolated from one another, so that conversations with people we do not know require an extra effort. I promise I’ll make that extra effort with you, as much as I can, and I would like to ask you to make the extra effort as well. Come back to Sunday worship if you haven’t been here for a while. Join the Wednesday morning Conversation with Carla. Soon you’ll receive a letter about a new staffing proposal, which includes dates and times for conversations about the proposal, both in-person and via zoom. Join in. And as soon as it’s comfortable to do so, I’ll be eating lunch on the front lawn at the turquoise picnic table on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pack a sandwich and join me. But while we wait for warmer weather, please make a point to connect with someone you don’t yet know.

Love,
Carla

Stewardship Campaign Announcement

“Fulfilling God’s Promise”—Pilgrim’s ’22-’23 Stewardship Campaign

Beginning on Sunday, April 3, this year’s Stewardship campaign “Fulfilling God’s Promise” will begin. Over the course of three Sundays, we will consider the questions “What is God’s purpose for Pilgrim?”; “Why is supporting Pilgrim’s purpose a high priority for me?”; and, “How can I help fulfill God’s purpose for Pilgrim?”. On Sunday, April 24, the campaign will culminate with a celebration of commitments made for the coming year.

This year’s Stewardship Team of Carla Bailey, Jon Welles, Tucker Hanlon, Julie Johnson, and Steve Grindy have prepared a message and pledge information for you to review, which you should have received in the mail by now. We ask you to give thoughtful consideration of making a pledge prior to the celebration. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or comments. If you didn’t receive a packet of information, please contact the office and one will be provided for you.

Newsletter

The next edition of the paper newsletter goes out Thursday, April 7. Please send any items to the office by Tuesday, April 5. Thank you!

Memorial Service for John Morrison

A memorial service for John "Jock" Morrison will be held at Pilgrim on Saturday, April 2. The visitation will begin at 10:00 am, with the service at 11:00 am. The Duluth News Tribune published an obituary last week.

Office Closed

The church office will be closed Monday, April 4.

Pilgrim Book Club

Pilgrim Women's Book Club will meet April 11 at 4:00 pm. We are still meeting on Zoom. Our selection for April is Danielle Sosin's The Long-Shining Waters. This beautifully written novel explores the allure of Lake Superior to three women who lived along its shores in different historical times. The New York Times Book Review refers to this book as "haunting, rich in historical detail, … an unforgettable work of fiction."

To borrow a copy of this book, just stop in the church office and sign one out. Your borrowed copy will be due back in the church office on April 12, the day after our April Book Club meeting.

Join us on Zoom.

Need a Ride to Church?

Book a ride on the Pilgrim Celestial Express. It's better than Lyft, better than Uber, even better than Amtrak! Call Patrick at Church—(218) 724‑8503—for a free ticket.

Awaiting your request are such luminaries as Steve Cushing, Bob MacLean, Bob Lindquist, Dennis Falk, and John Fochs. They may not be the fastest drivers, but they sure are friendly.

The Celestial Express's two current passengers describe the experience in glowing terms: "It's out-of-this-world."

Coffee with Carla

Grab a coffee (or the morning beverage of your choice) and join us for conversation. We will meet via Zoom each Wednesday at 10:00 am. See you there!
