Newsletter and eNews for Thursday, April 7
My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
A few minutes ago, I booked a three-day getaway for Warren and me post-Easter. We’ll be in a room with a kitchenette and a fireplace. I may or may not return, depending on if it keeps snowing.
This has felt like an unusually busy few months, and now we are on the brink of Holy Week. I have a few traditions of my own for Holy Week, starting with the folding instructions to make a palm branch into a cross. You’ll have to come to church to get a palm branch and the instructions. On Thursday I personally set the tables and light the candles in preparation for our soup and bread and communion meal (6:00 pm). On Friday I take a long walk and pray for my grieving friends. We’ll host a somber worship service Friday evening (7:00 pm) with Peace Church, Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, and Spirit of God Lutheran Church. I try to keep silent on Saturday—doing my usual Saturday chores, but also coming to the church to make sure all is prepared for the next day. Then Easter comes at last! And we rejoice, as we most certainly should, that God has the last word after all, in spite of all we do to drown that last word out. What do you do differently during Holy Week? I hope this year you’ll include coming to church this Sunday, and again on Thursday, and again on Friday, and again on Easter Day.
In other news, we meant it when the Church Council and I invited you to come to talk about the proposed Director of Faith Formation Ministries. We want your questions, your ideas, your hopes and concerns. Here are the times and zoom links for this week:
This Sunday: 11:15-noon in the sanctuary and via zoom
Monday, April 11: 7:00 pm via zoom
Wednesday, April 13: 10:00 am via zoom
(Make sure to click the correct link—Zoom requires a unique link for meetings not on a regular schedule.)
One more word: this one of thanks for the three talented Beaster daughters of Karl and Sara, Camilla, Emelyn, and Grace. They stepped in at the 11th hour to allow our handbell choir to play for you on Palm Sunday. Thank you!
See you Sunday, I hope,
Carla

Pilgrim Book Club
Pilgrim Women's Book Club will meet April 11 at 4:00 pm. We are still meeting on Zoom. Our selection for April is Danielle Sosin's The Long-Shining Waters. This beautifully written novel explores the allure of Lake Superior to three women who lived along its shores in different historical times. The New York Times Book Review refers to this book as "haunting, rich in historical detail, … an unforgettable work of fiction."
To borrow a copy of this book, just stop in the church office and sign one out. Your borrowed copy will be due back in the church office on April 12, the day after our April Book Club meeting.
Need a Ride to Church?
Book a ride on the Pilgrim Celestial Express. It's better than Lyft, better than Uber, even better than Amtrak! Call John Fochs at Church—(218) 728‑2061—for a free ticket.
Awaiting your request are such luminaries as Steve Cushing, Bob MacLean, Bob Lindquist, Dennis Falk, and John Fochs. They may not be the fastest drivers, but they sure are friendly.
The Celestial Express's two current passengers describe the experience in glowing terms: "It's out-of-this-world."

Show Us Your Walks
From Carolyn Sundquist, a spring day (3/30) on Burntside Lake by Ely
We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails! It's another way to stay connected in these troubled times.
What Patrick's Listening To
Revivals of one of the strangest musicals of all time, Anyone Can Whistle are happening in London and New York. Here's Barbara Cook singing the title number.
