My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

This Sunday we will be worshipping with and for Pilgrim’s children and youth. Just planning the service has made me happy! We will be recognizing our High School senior scholarship recipients, giving Bibles to third- and fourth-graders and Children’s Bibles to K-1’s. Our bell-ringing children will make another appearance, and the children will show and tell a story called “A Very BIG Problem”, written by Amy-Jill Levine and Sandy Eisenberg Sasso. It will be a wonderful celebration you won’t want to miss! We also have sunflower seedlings to give away to honor and remember Ukraine’s people.

We are rebuilding our program for children and youth here at Pilgrim, thanks to our Christian Ed Committee, led by Cindy Grindy. But we need YOU to step up to help, especially over the summer months. Families will be more willing to return to church if they are confident their children are welcomed and cared for. We have prepared a Sign-Up Genius to recruit Pilgrim folks for summer nursery care and help with our Vacation Bible School. Are you an older couple willing to spend a Sunday morning with kids? Sign up! Are you willing to give us a morning on June 13, 14, or 15? Sign up! Are you willing to prepare snacks? Read books? Give a young parent a worship break? Sign up!

As you know, we are in the process of recommending to the congregation that we hire a person to work at Pilgrim in Faith Formation, especially caring for families with children and youth. One way to know it’s possible to do that, is to see that Pilgrim members are willing to step up with and for children.

I hope to see you Sunday!

Treasurer's Report

I am pleased to provide an updated dashboard report of our ongoing financial situation. As you can see, the numbers are as of month end close, 3/31/2022. These figures represent 75% of our 2021/22 fiscal year.

As we approach our year-end, operating income tends to drop off But the good news is that we are at 93% of budgeted income, so I’m pleased with those numbers. Expenses continue at a budgeted pace—over all, expenses are at 67% of annual budget. Nothing unusual in the expenses.

The bottom line for the month is in the red given the drop off of income as anticipated. We had a deficit of $28,581.50 for the month. However, YTD continues in the black with a positive number of $23,007.29. I expect that by the end of April, YTD, however, we will be in the red. Our budget shows an annual deficit of $105,016. I hope we can do better than that. So far we have not had to use any of the 4% budgeted income from the Investment Fund. And actually, the 4% is not real income, it is simply using some of our Investment Funds to offset a larger deficit I hope not to have to use it. I again point out that our numbers are looking reasonably good only because we have been the recipient of $72,000 in cash from the Van Evera Estate and have received some other generous memorials in remembrance of members that have passed. Without that donation/bequest income we would be in a much worse deficit situation. ence, the continued need to figure out how to raise more income.

The YTD performance through March was okay. However, as feared, the market has now taken a tumble and our fund balance and performance is off as of 5/10/2022. Herein lies one of the pitfalls of using our endowment to fund ongoing deficits—when the market is good, we look good. However, if the market has a severe downturn, we are looking at trouble. No one can accurately predict at this point what the market is going to do given the high rate of inflation and the tragic war in Ukraine.

We continue to have a positive balance in our Capital Fund. Good news is that as of this writing I am not aware of any potentially expensive building issues.

All in all, our financials at this point are "ok." But we simply can not continue to budget for high deficits. It is not a sustainable situation.

If you have any questions about the numbers or seek more detail please do not hesitate to contact me via email at jonwelles@charter.net.

CHUM News

The Warming Center closed on April 1, and folks are again camping out while waiting for solutions to the housing crisis. John Cole, CHUM's Executive Director, and Joel Kilgour, CHUM's Warming Center Coordinator, have been meeting with city and county officials, service providers, business owners, and congregations to take the steps necessary to implement the 5-year plan to make sure everyone in our community has a place to live.

Stepping On Up is an ambitious plan to end unsheltered homelessness in our community, and will take many hands to bring into reality. We have immediate need for volunteer help from the following skilled professions:

  • Architect
  • Realtor
  • Carpenter
  • Diesel mechanic

Please spread the word! Contact Joel at (218) 340-4356 for more information.

Show Us Your Walks

Near Tischer Creek, from Jean Jacobson

We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails!

What Patrick's Listening To

A (rather melodramatic) love song by 17th-century composer Barabara Strozzi, creatively reimagined by Capella Mediterranea. You can read the text here.
