eNews for Thursday, May 19
My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
Today I write with the sad news that former Pilgrim minister Liz Oettinger has died. We received the message from Liz’s spouse Sidney Chase that Liz died on her birthday, May 18. Please remember Liz Oettinger’s family, spouse Sidney, and daughters Jessie and Sarah in your prayers. You may send a note to their Portland address: 3722 SE 11th Ave, Portland, OR 97202.
And I am appealing for some help please! We are hosting the memorial service for June H. Starkey, who, with her first husband Marshall Alworth, was a member of Pilgrim Church many years ago. We are looking for an usher or two and a few reception helpers. The service is at 1:00 pm this Saturday, May 21. Please let me know if you can help—carlajeanbailey@gmail.com.
We also REALLY need Pilgrims to help with our summer nursery care. Are you a couple willing to give a Sunday morning to be present in the nursery during worship to read stories and do simple crafts? Or might you just be a single helper for a Sunday or two? This is an easy way to love up some of our children and allow their moms and dads to enjoy worship free from the distracting worry over their little ones. It’s easy to sign up. We are seeing rising Covid cases again, as you probably know. Please be vigilant in wearing masks when we gather, washing hands, and keeping 6 feet apart. I know we are all tired of these cautions, but caring for one another is a cornerstone of our Christian walk.
I hope I’ll see you Sunday, if not before. We are welcoming new members in worship this week!

Pilgrim Book Club
For June, Pilgrim Women’s Book Club will be reading Louise Erdrich’s book The Birchbark House. This is the story of an eight-year-old Anishinaabe girl and her family set in 1847 near Lake Superior. The Birchbark House was a finalist for the National Young Adult fiction award in 2000. This book is the first in a series of five. Some have suggested this series is a counter point to the The Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Anyone interested in learning more about the Anishinaabe culture will find this an authentic and historically accurate read.
Stop in the office and sign out a copy, and then join us on Monday, June 13, at 4:00 pm via Zoom.
News from the CHUM Food Shelf
Currently the CHUM Food Shelf is struggling financially, despite a successful March food drive. This is a new and unusual situation for the food shelf, but we are living in unusual times:
- The cost of food has skyrocketed. CHUM’s Director of Distributive Services, Scott Van Deale, has to spend more money to get less food so that we can continue to supply our clients.
- The current high cost of transportation is no small thing either—programs put in place in the last few years require us to deliver boxes of food to more places, but the cost of gasoline, as we all have experienced, is off the chart.
Please consider a donation to CHUM's Food Shelf today.
CHUM's annual Rhubarb Festival is right around the corner and we can't do it without you! We are looking for more volunteers to help us set up, sell merchandise, run kids' activities, and help with our food booths. It's a lot of fun at the beautiful Stella Maris Holy Rosary Campus!
Youth Room Needs
The Pilgrim youth have been busy energetically repainting their room. (Ask Pastor Carla!) It looks awesome. They are looking for fun, large games that would make the room a special place. Do you have or know where we could get a foosball table or an air hockey table or a ping pong table at a reasonable price? Please let Cindy Grindy know. Thank you!
Duluth Preservation Alliance
Pilgrim is cordially invited to the Duluth Preservation Alliance Annual Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 26, at 6:30 pm (doors open at 6:00), at the West Theater, 317 North Central Avenue. Pilgrim is being recognized for last year's work on the sanctuary arch.
