My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
The Blessing Box, that wooden shelf box on the corner of 4th and 23rd that looks like little free library, has been empty of late. If you have food to share, that’s a good place for it. Personally, I’m putting in some socks, hats, and mittens. Of course, we don’t know who takes these freely offered gifts—that’s kind of the point. We just know that things get taken. Please consider making some donations. If you prefer to buy in bulk, you can make the contributions and we’ll put them out a few at a time.
I hope to see you Sunday!
Love,
Carla
P.S. Come knit or crochet with us! The 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from noon to 1:00.
Brain Game
From the Social Justice Ministry Committee:
One of the Social Justice Committee Ministry's goals is supporting community organizations through its outreach projects. One committee member suggested the new initiative of the Duluth Public Library, Every Child Ready Duluth (ECRD). ERDC is committed to improving school readiness in Duluth by addressing the early childhood needs in the community. The Brain Game book is an educational resource that supports parents, caregivers and daycare centers. It is developed by pediatrics and childhood development specialists. The activities and tips in the book coordinate with the brain development process, enriching their social and emotional well-being during each of the child's critical periods from birth through age 3.
Pilgrim’s donation of $1,000 purchased 100 books which will be distributed within the Duluth community. Pictured below are Bob and Anne MacLean along with Kelly-Kreig, administrator of the Brain Game, Carmella, director of ECRD.
Save the Date
Sunday, December 4: Advent Workshop
This is a fun event for everyone following church in fellowship hall. There will be food and Christmas
Crafts. Make ornaments, Christmas cookies, wreaths and more. Enjoy a delicious lunch. If you are able to
help in some way please contact Mary Anderson or sign up at church in the coming weeks.
Sunday, December 11: Youth Christmas Program
Already Jessica Schroeder, Pastor Carla, and Cindy Grindy have been hard at work making plans for this
year's Youth Christmas Program. We have chosen A New Star by Sharon K. Catwell for the youth to bring to
life. We need narrators, actors to portray Gabriel, Mary, Joseph, The Three Scholars, Elizabeth, Angels,
and Shepherds. This is going to be a lot of fun.
In addition, we need folks who are willing to play their instrument, sing, or perform either in person or virtually. Cookie makers? Ushers? What talent would you like to share? We hope everyone who is willing and able to participate will do so. Please contact Cindy Grindy and let her know if you are willing and able to participate or help in some way. Thank you!!
Sunday, December 18: Lessons and Carols
Join Pilgrim Choir for a service of Lessons and Carols, featuring familiar tunes in fresh, new arrangements,
plus a few surprises. We'll be accompanied by a small orchestra of familiar faces. See you then!
Pilgrim's Rooftop
Carla and Patrick brought up this year's Congdon Creek Preschool teachers to see the view from our rooftop.
Rekeying—A Reminder
Northern Door and Hardware will begin rekeying our front, parking lont, and alley doors in a couple of weeks. This is the first phase of developing a master key system throughout the entire building. Before that happens, Patrick will be provided with a number of new keys. If you feel you need a front door key because of the work you do for the church, please contact Patrick to get put on the list of those requesting new keys. Once the doors have been rekeyed, the old keys can be discarded as they will no longer be functional.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (218) 390-2393
Thanks,
Jon Welles
Directory Updates
Membership and Growth Ministry is planning to print new church directories this fall. If you've moved, or changed phone numbers or email addresses recently, please take a moment to send your updated contact info to the office.
A Child of Our Time with the DSSO
Join your fellow Pilgrims on Saturday, November 5, for this powerful concert by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and the Duluth Superior Chorus. Here is what the DSSO website says about this concert event:
Michael Tippett wrote A Child of Our Time between 1939 and 1941. After the Nazi’s “Kristallnacht” (November pogroms) had left a profound impression on Tippett, he decided to write an oratorio in support of oppressed people everywhere. The result was his stunning A Child of Our Time, written for chorus, orchestra, and vocal soloists. Tippett’s work has become most famous for its ingenious use of African American spirituals that connect the different parts of the oratorio. It is one of those rare works that is thought provoking, yet healing at the same time.
The DSSO has set aside a block of twenty tickets for Pilgrim Church at $20 each. You can sign up during coffee hour on Sunday, or contact Patrick in the office. Please make your checks out to Pilgrim.
