My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
As the colder, darker season sets in, I think more and more of things that are warm, nurturing, and soul-sustaining. There’s music, of course. For me, knitting hats and mittens to give away is nurturing. Tonight I’ll be baking cut-out Hallowe’en cookies for Sunday’s coffee hour. Tomorrow I’ll meet with Emelyn Beaster to prepare the slides and videos for this Sunday’s Second Hour. Two of my sisters are bringing my mom for a weekend visit. I’m doing some Advent reading since Advent begins in just a few weeks. These things soothe my spirit.
Every election season riles me up, particularly as I read of election denialism. I would be a terrible poll worker, I’m afraid. The best I can do is encourage everyone I know to vote! Pilgrim is offering rides to the polls to anyone who needs one. Our wonderful volunteer drivers are more than happy to take you to your voting place—just call the church to let us know you’d like a ride and we’ll arrange it.
I hope to see you this Sunday. There’ll be Hallowe’en cookies!
Love,
Carla
P.S. If you haven’t yet purchased a ticket to the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra concert on November 5, we’ll still be selling them this Sunday. Plan to attend our Second Hour as I help us look at the themes of A Child of Our Time.
P.S.S. We’re giving away the plants on Sunday that have accumulated in the church parlor. Please plan to take one or two or more!
Women's Fellowship
All Pilgrim women are invited to gather on Tuesday, November 8, at 1:30 pm in the church parlor. This will be a monthly event on the second Tuesday of the month. At this initial gathering, we will discuss what we would like to do as a group going forward. Come with ideas and enjoy time together with your fellow Pilgrims!
Pilgrim Women's Book Club
Pilgrim Women’s Book Club will meet Monday, November 14, at 4:00 pm via Zoom. This month we are reading Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. This book won four national awards and was a finalist for seven more.
Part ghost story, part road novel, this historic National Book Award winner is a dazzling journey through Mississippi’s past and present and an epic tale of hope and survival.
Because this is a Book in a Bag selection from the Duluth Public Library there are several copies available in the church office. Stop in and sign one out. You don’t need a library card to do that. The book you sign out will be due back in the church office on Wednesday, November 16, by 2:00 pm.

Volunteer Opportunity
Volunteer Readers Needed at Lighthouse Center for Vital Living
If you like to read and are confident reading aloud, please consider joining volunteers at the Lighthouse Center for Vital Living. Area residents who have difficulty reading the newspaper daily listen to our volunteer teams read and record the local news including obituaries which they do not receive on other news outlets. Obligation is only one morning a month. To hear us in action, click on the Listen to the News button on the top left corner of the Lighthouse website. To learn more, call the Lighthouse at (218) 624 4828 or call volunteer reading recruiter, Michelle, at (218) 390-7323.
Rekeying—A Reminder
Northern Door and Hardware will begin rekeying our front, parking lont, and alley doors in a couple of weeks. This is the first phase of developing a master key system throughout the entire building. Before that happens, Patrick will be provided with a number of new keys. If you feel you need a front door key because of the work you do for the church, please contact Patrick to get put on the list of those requesting new keys.
A Child of Our Time with the DSSO
Join your fellow Pilgrims on Saturday, November 5, for this powerful concert by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and the Duluth Superior Chorus. Here is what the DSSO website says about this concert event:
Michael Tippett wrote A Child of Our Time between 1939 and 1941. After the Nazi’s “Kristallnacht” (November pogroms) had left a profound impression on Tippett, he decided to write an oratorio in support of oppressed people everywhere. The result was his stunning A Child of Our Time, written for chorus, orchestra, and vocal soloists. Tippett’s work has become most famous for its ingenious use of African American spirituals that connect the different parts of the oratorio. It is one of those rare works that is thought provoking, yet healing at the same time.
The DSSO has set aside a block of twenty tickets for Pilgrim Church at $20 each. You can sign up during coffee hour on Sunday, or contact Patrick in the office. Please make your checks out to Pilgrim.

What Patrick's Listening To
I often have to think about Christmas music way earlier than most folks. So here's a favorite carol, "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree* by Elizabeth Poston, sung here by Seraphic Fire.
