My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

Another rainy November day. I’m home, weathering the side effects of a recent Covid booster, trying to be grateful for the protection I know this will give me. Truly, I have nothing to complain about—my couch is soft and my afghan is cozy and I’m reading the last book in a series about a bold crime reporter from San Francisco, napping between chapters. I expect I’ll be back to my busy self tomorrow, preparing for the Semenchuk funeral, Sunday worship, and a quick trip next week to D.C. to visit my daughter.

Yesterday, as I was working on the newsletter you will soon receive, I thought about what a fortunate life I lead. In the morning, Joan Semenchuk’s daughter told me some wonderful stories about her mom. Then I ran into Jenny Ballew who assured me all is set for the funeral reception. I practiced handbells with my fellow intrepid ringers, watched over our youth group as they learned some important self-care practices (and then played that age-old game—“sardines”). I prayed for the Beaster family as they navigate these sad days following the death of Karl and Tristan’s father. It was the kind of day parish ministers are so privileged to experience, and I am especially blessed to experience all this, and more, with you.

November is a good month to practice gratitude. For some of us, it’s hard to do just now. Life has thrown some curves that need attention before gratitude comes to the fore again. That’s ok. The rest of us will hold the light for you, and the day will come when you rejoice again. In the meantime, I, for one, am feeling particularly full of heart.

Love,
Carla

Pilgrim Women's Book Club

Pilgrim Women’s Book Club will meet Monday, November 14, at 4:00 pm via Zoom. This month we are reading Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. This book won four national awards and was a finalist for seven more.

Part ghost story, part road novel, this historic National Book Award winner is a dazzling journey through Mississippi’s past and present and an epic tale of hope and survival.

Because this is a Book in a Bag selection from the Duluth Public Library there are several copies available in the church office. Stop in and sign one out. You don’t need a library card to do that. The book you sign out will be due back in the church office on Wednesday, November 16, by 2:00 pm.

Hope to see you on Zoom..

Twin Ports Choral Project: All Things in Time

Saturday, November 12 | 7:30 pm | First Lutheran Church
The search for happiness and fulfillment is unique to each of us and yet universal to our humanity—we all share a need for meaning, for connection, for love, for peace. What dreams do we hold? What do we wish for? How do we maintain hope in the face of disappointment or tragedy? With works both historic and modern, traditional and popular, the Twin Ports Choral Project offers a varied program of choral music exploring the dreams, hopes, wishes, and wants that mark our human experience. Learn more and purchase tickets at twinportschoralproject.org.

Rekeying—A Reminder

Northern Door and Hardware will begin rekeying our front, parking lont, and alley doors in a couple of weeks. This is the first phase of developing a master key system throughout the entire building. Before that happens, Patrick will be provided with a number of new keys. If you feel you need a front door key because of the work you do for the church, please contact Patrick to get put on the list of those requesting new keys.

What Patrick's Listening To

This performance by Carol Burnett, Cass Elliot, and Bernadette Peters is delightfully unhinged.
