eNews for Thursday, April 21
My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
A joyous Eastertide to you all! May this season of hope bring a healthy dose of hope to your lives.
I want to remind you to send in your financial pledge to the church for fiscal year ’22-’23 if you have not already done so. It may be sitting beside your home computer, as ours did for the past few weeks. Now is the time to send it in, however, and I hope you find it possible to be generous in your giving.
Our Church Council has scheduled two more opportunities to gather, either via zoom or in-person, to discuss the proposal to create a new Director of Faith Formation Ministries position. We have been listening to many of your comments—both enthusiasm and worry—and we will discuss them at our next Church Council meeting. In the meantime, see below for an invitation to a Zoom gathering this coming Monday at 4:00 pm, and an in-person conversation following worship on May 1. We want to hear from you!
Thank you to all who made this past Holy Week so meaningful—musicians, readers, decorators, soup-makers, singers, egg-hiders! As I said in my Easter sermon, what happens on the days and weeks and months AFTER resurrection Sunday give meaning to the day, but the events of Holy Week were especially lovely as well.
Onward,
Carla
Damiano Center Community Kitchen
Volunteers needed!
Pilgrim Church has been alerted to the fact that the Damiano Center Community Kitchen is once again in need of Pilgrim volunteers to help prepare meals on the fourth Monday of each month from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm starting on May 23. One change is that only 2 or 3 Pilgrim members are needed for each shift. Please get in touch with the office at office@pilgrimduluth.org or (218) 724‑8503 if you are able to help. Our favorite kitchen manager, Flora Woodfork, continues to supervise the Damiano kitchen. Hair nets, aprons and gloves are available for volunteers at the Damiano Center. You may want to bring your own apron and baseball-type cap. The Damiano Center is located at 206 West Fourth Street in Duluth.
Pilgrim Book Club
Pilgrim Women’s Book Club will meet on Monday, May 9, at 4:00 pm via Zoom. The book we’ll be reading is another Books in a Bag selection, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexis. That means there will be 10 copies available. Stop in the church office and sign one out. You are expected to return your copy of the book the day after we meet, May 10.
This book is one of the 10 most frequently banned books of 2021, as reported recently in the New York Times. Which seems strange when you read about all the National awards it received when it was published. Since banned books have been much in the news recently, we decided to read some of them to try and understand what the fuss is all about.
Why not join us on our journey of discovery? Sign out a copy of the book, read it, and join the discussion on May 9.
Need a Ride to Church?
Book a ride on the Pilgrim Celestial Express. It's better than Lyft, better than Uber, even better than Amtrak! Call John Fochs at Church—(218) 728‑2061—for a free ticket.
Awaiting your request are such luminaries as Steve Cushing, Bob MacLean, Bob Lindquist, Dennis Falk, and John Fochs. They may not be the fastest drivers, but they sure are friendly.
The Celestial Express's two current passengers describe the experience in glowing terms: "It's out-of-this-world."

Show Us Your Walks

We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails!
What Patrick's Listening To
You might have heard that I'm playing in the pit orchestra for Pippin at UMD. Well, here's a clip of Ben Vereen with the original broadway cast performing "Magic to Do" with Bob Fosse's iconic choreography. And as a treat, here's a clip from the 1982 Tony Awards. ("Hi, everybody! I'm Annie Miller" just sends me.)
