eNews for Thursday, April 14
My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
I hope you are able to join us for a soup supper and communion this evening at 6:00, and tomorrow for an ecumenical Good Friday service at 7:00 pm, and for Easter on Sunday at 10:00, but if not, whether you are traveling or isolating because of Covid, or are simply not able to come, I hope you’ll find a few minutes for quiet this evening and tomorrow especially. The last days of Jesus’ life were sad, and we would do well to let that sadness wash over us as we remember him, his life and his courage, even to death. The joy of Easter has its origin in sorrow, which, in my thinking, makes it all the more welcome. A blessed Easter to you all.
Love,
Carla
Pilgrim Book Club
Pilgrim Women’s Book Club will meet on Monday, May 9, at 4:00 pm via Zoom. The book we’ll be reading is another Books in a Bag selection, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexis. That means there will be 10 copies available. Stop in the church office and sign one out. You are expected to return your copy of the book the day after we meet, May 10.
This book is one of the 10 most frequently banned books of 2021, as reported recently in the New York Times. Which seems strange when you read about all the National awards it received when it was published. Since banned books have been much in the news recently, we decided to read some of them to try and understand what the fuss is all about.
Why not join us on our journey of discovery? Sign out a copy of the book, read it, and join the discussion on May 9.

Neighbors Living Unsheltered in Duluth
The Warming Center has closed, and we are collecting tents and sleeping bags for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. They have returned to living outdoors because there is nowhere else to go.
How can you help? Visit SteppingOnUpDuluth.org and explore the options. View the video to learn about the 5-year plan to address the homeless crisis. Read the fact sheet to learn about Phase I, and contact the Mayor or your City Councilor to express your concerns and invite their leadership. Get others involved by gathering folks to view the video and explore ways you can offer support.

Need a Ride to Church?
Book a ride on the Pilgrim Celestial Express. It's better than Lyft, better than Uber, even better than Amtrak! Call John Fochs at Church—(218) 728‑2061—for a free ticket.
Awaiting your request are such luminaries as Steve Cushing, Bob MacLean, Bob Lindquist, Dennis Falk, and John Fochs. They may not be the fastest drivers, but they sure are friendly.
The Celestial Express's two current passengers describe the experience in glowing terms: "It's out-of-this-world."

Show Us Your Walks
From Carolyn Sundquist, a sunny day in Ely
We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails! It's another way to stay connected in these troubled times.
What Patrick's Listening To
Here's a fun video from pianist Nahre Sol comparing two greats of the 18th century, J.S. Bach and Domenico Scarlatti.
