eNews for Thursday, February 2
My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
Happy Groundhog Day, for what it’s worth. We’ll be lucky if we only get six more weeks of winter.
Last night our Youth Group spent a half hour learning about the Damiano Center—all the many and varied services they provide—and then telling each other about what they learned. Then, in groups of three with several brave adults, they papered the neighborhood with flyers about our Souper Bowl of Caring soup sales. Then they came back to church for hot chocolate and Rice Krispie bars. The whole evening was high energy and the bet combination of service-learning. We are so blessed with amazing youth and amazing adult advisors!
Now, it’s our turn to learn about Damiano. Executive Director Seth Currier will be with us this coming Sunday in worship and leading a Second Hour of learning after worship. He has Damiano’s story to tell, and it’s a truly inspiring one! Also, Sunday is the last day to order soup, the sale of which will support Damiano’s work. Several of the soups are sold out, but there are still three types ready to order, one of which is being made by our youth group this next Wednesday.
Thank you to Damiano for all they do to support the dignity of people in need. Thank you Pilgrim Youth for supporting this Super Souper Bowl of Caring project! And thank you soup makers and buyers, all!
Love, love, love,
Carla
P.S. I hope you read our exciting announcement that the Church Council has extended the invitation to M Hakes to join our Pilgrim staff as Director of Faith Formation. Welcome M!
Social Justice Committee Seeks Ideas for Donations
The Social Justice Committee is beginning to make decisions about which community organizations and activities to support out of the outreach funds approved in the church budget. This year the Committee has about $5,000 of discretionary funds to award to support justice and mercy activities in the community.
If you have ideas about organizations that the Social Justice Committee should review to receive funds in the next several months, please send these thoughts to Denny Falk at dfalk@d.umn.edu or call him at (218) 341-5483. Thanks.
Youth Room
Hello Pilgrims! The youth group is working on redoing our youth room to be more cozy and welcoming. We are looking for donations of a short list of items, and we will gratefully accept any monetary donations as well. Keep an eye out for a scone bake sale in mid-March, hosted by the youth group to raise money for new decorations for our room. Thank you!
Items we’re looking for:
- Bean bag chairs/comfy chairs
- Christmas lights
- Whiteboard paint
- Projector OR tv
- Light fixtures (i.e. small lamps)
- Cozy blankets
Pilgrim Women's Book Club
For February, Pilgrim Women’s Book Club is reading The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan. The book jacket recommends this novel as “A beautiful story of love, loss, and the redemptive power of friendship,” and also, "Old-fashioned storytelling with a sprinkling of magic." We like using the book-club-in-a-bag selections, so there are copies of this book available in the church office in the blue bag to the left of the office entry. Just stop in and sign one out. We will meet at 4:00 pm on Zoom on February 13. And your book will be due back to the church office on Wednesday, February 15. Join us for what always proves to be a fun and lively discussion.
