Newsletter and eNews for Thursday, February 9

My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

The news from Turkey and Syria is simply heart-breaking, isn’t it? You may have a favorite charity for responding to disasters like this—Red Cross and Red Crescent, Church World Service, UNICEF all come to mind. Our denomination, the United Church of Christ, also works with organizations on the ground to provide disaster relief. If you would like to make a contribution through our church, please make a check out to Pilgrim, but be sure to add disaster relief on the memo line. We will forward your gift to our national UCC disaster relief effort. Or, you may go to this link to donate on-line: https://www.ucc.org/giving/ways-to-give/disaster-relief/. And pray for the untold thousands who are alive but will suffer for a long time as a result of this terrible event.

This Sunday is our Souper Bowl of Caring Day! We have buckets of soup to sell (actually packaged in 2.5 cup containers). If you didn’t get your order in, we will have a few extras for purchase. Many thanks to our soup-making teams, organizers, and YOU!

Love, love, love,
Carla

Pilgrim News

Here is the latest edition of Pilgrim's Newsletter.

CHUM "Day on the Hill"

A small, but important, update to the CHUM "Day on the Hill" item in the newsletter: the registration deadline has been changed to February 12 (not February 15 as printed).

Souper Bowl in the News

Fox 21 aired a story on our Souper Bowl fundraiser last night. Check it out!

Snowblower

The Church’s residential-type snowblower was replaced this year by a commercial duty machine that is better suited for snow removal around the Church building. We replaced our Ahren’s Deluxe 28” and it is now available for sale. It has just come out of the shop at Denny’s Lawn & Garden after being checked over and cleared for service.

We purchased that unit new in 2019. Trade in is between $750 and $1,000.

If you are interested in purchasing this snowblower, please shoot me a bid. Winter isn’t over yet!

Blessings,
Jon Welles, Treasurer

Youth Room

Hello Pilgrims! The youth group is working on redoing our youth room to be cozier and more welcoming. We are looking for donations of a short list of items, and we will gratefully accept any monetary donations as well. Keep an eye out for a scone bake sale in mid-March, hosted by the youth group to raise money for new decorations for our room. Thank you!

Items we’re looking for:

  • Bean bag chairs/comfy chairs
  • Christmas lights
  • Whiteboard paint
  • Projector OR tv
  • Light fixtures (i.e. small lamps)
  • Cozy blankets

Pilgrim Women's Book Club

For February, Pilgrim Women’s Book Club is reading The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan. The book jacket recommends this novel as “A beautiful story of love, loss, and the redemptive power of friendship,” and also, "Old-fashioned storytelling with a sprinkling of magic." We like using the book-club-in-a-bag selections, so there are copies of this book available in the church office in the blue bag to the left of the office entry. Just stop in and sign one out. We will meet at 4:00 pm on Zoom on February 13. And your book will be due back to the church office on Wednesday, February 15. Join us for what always proves to be a fun and lively discussion.

Hope to see you on Zoom.

Show Us Your Walks

From Clyde Johnson, a tree on Fourth Street across from Holy Rosary

We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails!

What Patrick's Listening To

Last Sunday's LOON Cor concert has sent me spiraling back to the 17th century. Here's a wonderful madrigal by Monteverdi. The djembe is not at all authentic, but I love it.
