My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

As you read in last week’s Thursday email, Patrick Colvin has taken another position where he can stretch his techy wings, and so is resigning from the administrative work he has done for Pilgrim. The really good news is that he will continue as our Director of Music. He and Jessica Schroeder (and now M as well) are such an excellent worship team, that I would be REALLY upset if we were to lose him from that role!

Pilgrim’s Personnel Committee has begun working with me to review the position description and plan for advertising and recruiting candidates. In the meantime, I am looking at some summer options that will provide stability during the transition. Where I need your help is in covering the church office for several weeks beginning Monday, May 22. I’m looking for volunteers to be in the office from 9-1, Mondays through Thursdays. Might you be able to help? Please respond to me at carlajeanbailey@gmail.com with days you could be here. I’ll also have a sign-up sheet available this Sunday.

Last weekend’s music offerings were so splendid! The Brunelles and Clara Osowsky brought such beauty and joy to fund-raising—no small task! And you have been so generous with your contributions and pledges to the piano rebuild. We are still figuring out a few book-keeping things, but we believe we’re within $6,000 of our final goal. And the Sunday afternoon premier concert of the new Borealis Chamber Group was just stunning. “Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear the music ringing; it finds an echo in my soul—how can I keep from singing?”

A few reminders: Our Youth Group is inviting us to a pot-luck supper and game night on Wednesday, May 24. See elsewhere in this email an invitation to a 20-minute outdoor pop-up concert on our front lawn at 5:40 that same evening. Come for the concert, bring some food to share, then play games! Oh, and bring a “white elephant” gift for BINGO.

And finally, we will be recognizing our graduating high school seniors in worship on June 4th. We also want to recognize others who are completing a certification program, vocational program, college or graduate program. Do you know who those folks might be? Please let us know!

Love to you all,
Carla

Chum 50th Anniversary

On Sunday, June 4, Chum will host an interfaith Service of Thanksgiving to kick off its 50th anniversary of service to the Northland. This Thanksgiving Service will serve as a powerful symbol of unity, compassion, and faith as we stand beside those in need. The service, which takes place at First United Methodist Church, 230 E Skyline Pkwy at 3:00 pm, will feature representatives from various faith traditions who will lead us in prayers, readings, and reflections centered around gratitude, compassion, and the importance of community support.

Music at Pilgrim

Sunday, May 21, 10:00 am: Join Pilgrim Choir and friends at worship for our spring cantata. We will present J.S. Bach's "Wer da gläubet und getauft wird", a cantata for Ascension. Tasha Kapp will also share a hymn by Vivaldi, accompanied by the Highland Quartet.

Wednesday, May 24, 5:40 pm: The Bach Society of Minnesota is giving a series of "mobile mini" concerts in Duluth, and Pilgrim is one of their stops! They'll play for just 20 minutes on our front lawn before heading to their next location. Come check it out!

All Church Bingo and Game Night

Pilgrims of all ages are invited to join the Pilgrim Youth Group on Wednesday, May 24, at 6:00 pm in Salter Hall for a Bingo and Game Night. We’ll start with a rousing game of bingo and then split off to play other games. This will be a great opportunity to learn or share how to play a game like poker, cribbage, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, etc. We hope to see you there!

We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails!

What Patrick's Listening To

You might be aware that A Little Night Music is my favorite musical. Here's a demo recording of its original opening number, "Numbers", played and sung by the composer.
