Auld Lang Syne for World Alzheimer Awareness Day September 23

By Maren Tirabassi

(gathered from bits of friends’ conversation during my fifteen year daily visiting in memory loss units… let’s face it, sentimentality is not a crime there!)

Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?
To this I would not come, I thought—in all my younger times.

For auld lang syne, my dear, the long since passed and gone.
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, for what we’ve lost and won.

So I forget the ones I love, —the dearest and the best!
This illness steals the heart away—the cursing with the blest.

For auld lang syne, my dear, the long since passed and gone
and what I ate for breakfast, too, at the rising of the sun.

We two have chased the wealth of life and picked the flowers of joy
We’ve wandered many a weary mile, since we were girl and boy.
We two have paddled rivers wide, we’ve raised up children grown,
but blurred by roar of wind and tide—they are to us unknown.

For auld lang syne, my dear, the long since passed and gone—
O some of us are angry now, and some are deep withdrawn.

Yet I’ve a hand I wish you’d hold, and, when you smile, I shine.
The angels store my memories for auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear—sweet present, precious past—
Let’s drink that cup of kindness, for the kindness is what lasts.

Dog Toy Making for Animal Allies

This Sunday, September 25, after church

Please bring your old T-shirts and scissors to make dog and cat toys to donate for Animal Allies. We will work after church for 45-50 minutes. We will work outside weather permitting. If there is inclement weather we will work in fellowship hall. All Pilgrims are invited. Parker and Grace thought it would be good to have a service project where we did something nice for someone else and still had a chance to visit with each other. Contact Grace Beaster, Parker Tewes or Cindy Grindy with questions.

We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails! It's another way to stay connected in these troubled times.

What Patrick's Listening To

British choral group I Fagiolini is doing a series that somehow combines Renaissance music with a decent parody of The Matrix that is absolutely sending me. Or if that's a bit much (understandable) you can skip right to an excellent performance of de Victoria's "Alma Redemptoris Mater".
