My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
Thank you all for a wonderful celebration of my installation last Sunday. I’m still feeling deeply peaceful from the service—beautiful music, wonderful preaching, an outstanding reception—all good! Now, incredibly, we have another celebration THIS Sunday morning! We are celebrating Pilgrim’s 150th anniversary. Jack Kemp and Charlotte Frantz will once again be participating in worship, and we have a number of greetings from former clergy and clergy friends. Immediately after worship we’ll gather downstairs for coffee and cake and some memory sharing as we look at the mural telling Pilgrim’s story. I hope you’ll be with us either in person or on-line “Connecting Hearts to Hands for OVER 150 Years”! We have lots of cake to eat and hopes to share!
Advent Workshop
Join us on Sunday, December 5, after worship to prepare for the season. We will have light refreshments in Salter Hall immediately following worship, and crafts in Fellowship Hall: ornament creation, card making, wreaths, and more. Are you willing to host a table with a craft, or to help with set up/clean up? Reach out to Mary Anderson at manders1@css.edu or (218) 213‑7704. For safety, we ask you to stay masked in Fellowship Hall—please leave food and beverages upstairs.
Choir Cantata
During worship on Sunday, December 5 (before the Advent workshop!), Pilgrim Choir and a few special guests will present Schubert's Mass in G. This gentlest of masses was written in six days in March 1815 when Schubert was a mere 18 years old. It has been a favorite of choirs around the world since it was published in 1846. We look forward to sharing this beautiful, contemplative work with you during worship.
Longest Night Service
Save the date! There will be a Longest Night service the evening of Tuesday, December 21. Stay tuned for more details!
Blessing Box Update
Please bring some winter-friendly nonperishable items to the Blessing Box! Food, mittens, hats, scarves, are all most appreciated.
Meal for Loaves and Fishes
Thank you to our youth and parents for preparing a meal for Loaves and Fishes, one of the local homeless shelters. The kids worked hard in the Pilgrim kitchen to prepare wild rice vegan burgers, Mexican street corn, homemade applesauce and gluten-free oat chocolate chip cookies. Yum! We had a lot of fun too. Thanks to Caro Shull, Tracy Averill, and Kathy Dowell for being the adults present. Thanks to Maddie and Alyssa Averill, Emelyn, Grace, and Camilla Beaster, Josie Van Antwerp, Kellen Huot, Annelies Schooderman, Piper Linn, Hermione Linn, Parker Tewes, and Colon and Hannah Willemsen for their work.
Colin Willemsen Photography
Pilgrim's own Colin Willemsen's photography will be showcased in a 2022 calendar fundraiser for Duluth East High School.
Colin's description:
"The calendar starts off in January with a photo of the Palisade Head cliffs, with sea smoke on a
sub-zero morning. The sea smoke theme is continued in February with sun-lit sea smoke drifting between
an island, this was taken on a -25º F morning. For March we see the Northern Lights dancing over the
shoreline of Tettegouche State Park. As spring slowly starts in Minnesota, I included two waterfall
photographs. A large, raging waterfall, and the next month a small trickle next to a delicate display
of ferns. In June, you will see a photo taken from in Lake Superior. With my wet suit, underwater housing,
and paddle-board I captured an amazing sunrise reflection at Split Rock Lighthouse. In July the calendar
displays a waterfall from a Minnesota slot canyon. The Milky Way Galaxy over Ellingson Island at Split
Rock State Park brings the stars to the month of August. Fall starts and we see the fall colors at a
beautiful stone bridge and a display below a large cliff in the BWCA. For November, I chose a windy and
wavy day on Lake Superior. Finally for December, a rime ice-filled forest on a ski trail at Spirit Mountain."
You can order calendars at Duluth East's website.

Show Us Your Walks
From Jane Killough, a sunrise over Brighton Beach on November 7
We're lucky to live in a community with so much beauty and access to nature. Send Patrick your photos to share your walks with us in future emails! It's another way to stay connected in these troubled times.
What Patrick's Listening To
In a romantic mood lately. Here's the late, great Rebecca Luker singing Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye."
