My Bailiwick

Dear Pilgrims,

Warren and I have been away this week for a few days of pre-Lent R&R. We didn’t go very far south—just to Chicago—but it is appreciably warmer here, and visiting the Garfield Conservatory spring flower show warmed our bones. Tonight we’re going to the Chicago Magic Lounge for dinner and a magic show! We’ll be back Friday evening, ready to dive into the busy Lenten Season.

Last Sunday’s Souper Bowl of Caring was such a rousing success—thank you to everyone who planned, cooked, sold, and bought soup! We are waiting on a final number, but because of you, we will make a generous financial donation to the Damiano Center. And speaking of the Damiano Center, now that we know more about the breadth of their services, thanks to Damiano’s Executive Director Seth Currier, we will be looking for more ways to connect. One immediate need is for a few more volunteers to serve the noon meal on Monday, February 27. Can you help? Please let us know.

This Sunday and next, you will be able to pick up a purple candle and a Lenten Devotional booklet for your individual meditation and prayer. It’s a little different this year—more of an opportunity to do your own devotional writing with prompts for each of the six weeks of Lent. As you know, purple is the liturgical color of Lent. Our sanctuary paraments will be purple, and there will be six purple candles on the communion table. On Wednesday and any time after, you’ll be able to watch an Ash Wednesday service of worship on YouTube that includes readings, music, and prayers. Just go to the church website to find the link.

From a liturgical perspective, Lent is a time for quiet introspection and prayer, preparing for the Jesus-centered events of Holy Week, strengthening our courage to bear witness to the power of our trust in God. We have a six-week series on Justice and Mercy for the second hours of the Sundays of Lent, and several special music events planned, but the work of reflection and prayer that we all need to do, is up to us as individuals. I hope the resources we have prepared will help.

In the meantime, love to us all,
Carla
