My Bailiwick
Dear Pilgrims,
I find myself walking along the lake saying, over and over “At Last! At Last! Thank God Almighty, it’s spring at LAST!” Then came the admonishment to try to use less water so as not to overwhelm the city sewer system—don’t do laundry, maybe even bathe last often. Sheesh. It’s always something.
In the meantime, we are preparing for the grand May 5th day and evening celebration—an art show of Carolyn Brunelle’s paintings and an evening fund-raising concert with Philip Brunelle and Clara Osowsky. Please reserve the date and invite your friends to come—both to the opening art reception from 3:00-5:00 pm on May 5, and the concert at 7:00. We are so lucky to have this celebration of the arts help us raise the funds to rebuild our Steinway piano. And speaking of raising the funds, Carolyn Sundquist has paved the way for us to receive matching funds from the Hegardt Family Foundation, one-to-one match up to $25,000. Please note that we will receive donations and pledges, and that a donation of $750 will buy you a piano key!
Our church building
The third presentation in our church’s annual pledge campaign will focus on our building and the many ways it serves our community. Sharon Kemp, member of the Building and Finance Committee, will speak, and a number of photos will demonstrate the gift our building is to us and to the wider community. “Because of You, Our Church Changes Lives” is our stewardship theme. And it is SO true. Your pledges of financial support change lives.
Love to you all,
Carla
Pilgrim Celebrates the Arts
A painting by Carolyn Brunelle, Tortoise and Hare
Friday, May 5, 3:00 pm: Minneapolis artist Carolyn Brunelle will show an exhibit of her paintings in Salter Hall, with an opening reception 3:00-5:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. Here's a video of Carolyn in her Studio.
Friday, May 5, 7:00 pm: Philip Brunelle will give a concert as a fundraiser for our Piano Rebuilding Fund. Philip is a choral scholar, conductor, and organist, and founder of VocalEssence. Joined by Clara Osowski, mezzo-soprano, Philip will present a program of British music—the first half of the recital will showcase Pilgrim’s 1919 Steinway piano; after a brief intermission, Philip will play the Jaeckel organ.
Admission to the events is free. All proceeds will go toward Pilgrim’s Piano Rebuilding Fund, and up to $25,000 will be matched by the Hegardt Foundation.
Upcoming Concerts
Friday, April 21, 6:30 pm: To celebrate the wonders of Johann Sebastian Bach's music, the Arrowhead Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and friends will provide an evening in concert, catered reception, and silent auction hosted at First Lutheran Church in Duluth. Included on the program are several friends of Pilgrim: M. Hakes, Tasha Kapp, Dr. Thomas Hamilton, and Dr. Betsy Husby.
Sunday, May 7, 3:00 pm: Borealis Chamber Artists will present its first program, at Pilgrim, now rescheduled!

What Patrick's Listening To
This isn't music, but it is music-adjacent. 60 Minutes had a nice feature on the ongoing reconstruction at Notre Dame de Paris.
